Is ChatCut a good After Effects alternative?

Yes, if you want to generate editable motion graphics—titles, lower thirds, charts and callout cards—from a prompt on a real video timeline instead of keyframing layers and expressions by hand, or let Claude Code and Codex drive the edit. If you need 3D mesh modeling, Cinema 4D compositing, complex VFX rotoscoping or custom JavaScript expression rigs, After Effects remains the better tool.

Can ChatCut open or export After Effects (.aep) projects?

No. ChatCut does not import or export After Effects .aep files or .mogrt templates. It exports editable XML timelines for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, CapCut drafts on desktop, and transparent ProRes 4444 motion graphics overlays on Pro.

Does After Effects have an AI agent or MCP server?

After Effects has an AI Assistant in public Beta that helps organize layers, write expressions and generate media using generative credits. It does not offer an official local MCP server for external coding agents like Claude Code or Codex.

Is ChatCut free?

Yes. The ChatCut plugin runs in Claude Code and the Codex app, and ChatCut Desktop connects Claude Code, Codex and other agents through a local MCP server. Your agent edits the real timeline, which you can keep adjusting by hand.

How the plugin works

Can I finish a ChatCut edit in another editor?

Yes. ChatCut exports XML timelines for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and ChatCut Desktop also exports editable CapCut drafts. It does not export Final Cut Pro XML (FCPXML).
